Emerging Technicians

Secondary and Entry-Level Certifications

After hearing from secondary instructors in mechatronics and industrial maintenance across the nation about a need for an industry-recognized credential geared towards entry-level technicians, AMTEC once again worked with NOCTI to develop two new credentials, the Emerging Technician: Maintenance Mechanic and the Emerging Technician: Electrical. These assessments are being utilized as end-of-program assessments for CTE programs across the nation. Recently, community college systems are exploring the use of both Emerging Technician assessments as credit for prior learning, as well as articulation agreements with secondary-level programs that utilize them for assessing their learners.

Emerging Technician: Maintenance Mechanic

Entry-level Maintenance Mechanics perform machine setup, troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance services. This assessment tests knowledge in the following areas:

  1. Industrial Maintenance Electrical Principles (17%)
  2. Maintaining Industrial Equipment (41%)
  3. Fluid Power (23%)
  4. Fundamentals of Machine Tools (19%)

Emerging Technician: Electrical

Entry-level Electrical Technicians apply electrical theory and related knowledge to diagnose and modify developmental or operational electrical machinery and electrical control equipment and circuitry in industrial environments. This assessment tests knowledge in the following areas:

  1. Industrial Maintenance Electrical Principles (28%)
  2. Industrial Maintenance Electrical Motor Controls (29%)
  3. Industrial Maintenance of PLC (28%)
  4. Robotics and Automation (15%)

Most recently, AMTEC worked with NOCTI to develop the AMTEC Industry 4.0 Certification. Industry 4.0 represents the latest evolution in advanced manufacturing and maintenance, shaping how factories and companies operate across the United States. The certification is built on the nationally recognized AMTEC Industry 4.0 Skills Standard, developed by subject matter experts from Boeing, Toyotetsu, Toyota, Interactive Training Systems, and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

Emerging Technician: Industry 4.0

This skills standard ensures comprehensive coverage of key Industry 4.0 concepts. The certification assessment includes the following areas (with percentage of exam content):

  1. Industry 4.0 Fundamentals – 10%
  2. Internet of Things (IoT) & Industrial IoT (IIoT) – 20%
  3. Big Data & Analytics – 8%
  4. System Integration – 25%
  5. Predictive Maintenance – 26%
  6. Tracking Systems – 11%

The assessment can be used alongside the AMTEC Industry 4.0 curriculum or as a standalone tool to validate skills within your existing program. Earning this certification demonstrates that a student or employee is prepared to enter the workforce and possesses foundational knowledge of Industry 4.0 technologies and practices.
